Happy Mother's Day

19 March 2023

Mother's Day is a celebration that has evolved significantly over time. What began as a religious festival in ancient Greece to honor the mother of the gods, Rhea, has become a day dedicated to showing appreciation for all mothers around the world. Over the years, Mother's Day has undergone a significant transformation, with brands now using the day to market and sell their products.

Here are the top five UK Mother's Day marketing campaigns:

  1. Moonpig's "Mum deserves a card as unique as she is" campaign. This campaign encouraged people to create personalised cards for their mothers, with the slogan "Mum deserves a card as unique as she is." The campaign was highly successful, with Moonpig reporting a 29% increase in sales compared to the previous year.

  2. Boots' "Because She's Worth It" campaign. This campaign featured a range of gift ideas for Mother's Day, including beauty products, fragrances, and skincare items. The campaign was a hit, with sales increasing by 14% compared to the previous year.

  3. Marks & Spencer's "Mother's Day Food" campaign. This campaign showcased a range of food options that people could buy for their mothers, such as afternoon tea, luxury chocolates, and champagne. The campaign was highly successful, with sales increasing by 7.5% compared to the previous year.

  4. Interflora's "Make Someone Happy" campaign. This campaign focused on the emotional side of Mother's Day, encouraging people to show their appreciation for their mothers by sending them flowers. The campaign was highly successful, with Interflora reporting a 10% increase in sales compared to the previous year.

  5. Cadbury's "Mother's Day" campaign. This campaign featured a range of chocolate gifts that people could buy for their mothers, including a personalised Dairy Milk bar. The campaign was successful, with sales increasing by 5.4% compared to the previous year.

While Mother's Day marketing campaigns can be successful, it's important for brands to recognise that not everyone wants to receive communications about the day. Some people may have lost their mothers or may have difficult relationships with them, and Mother's Day can be a painful reminder of this. As a result, brands are now offering people the option to opt out of receiving Mother's Day communications.

If you think Mother's Day could be a good time to market your products or services, give us a shout and we will create an amazing Mother's Day campaign for you in 2024!
